Stone Gossard along with Ali Lutz and Christine Hamman from Partners in Health (PIH) journeyed to Haiti on July 14, 2009 to view the work of Zanmi Lasante (PIH's partner organization). Through this trip, they were able to see first-hand the important changes taking place at ZL’s facilities in Cange and La Colline in the Central Plateau, and St. Marc in the Artibonite Department.
Leading the tour was Dr. Milien Christophe, the Clinical Director at Lacolline. Having grown up in an area as poor as Lacolline, Dr. Christophe is dedicated to providing first-rate health care and helping to lift communities like his own out of poverty. The staff the group met the following day similarly conveyed the dedicated—and infectious—enthusiasm for ZL’s numerous programs, ranging from medical projects to agricultural initiatives, and the pride they take in being able to use their training and expertise to help their communities.
The last full day in Haiti took the group to Petit Riviere and St. Marc, cities in the Artibonite Department. The difference in a community like Cange—where people have had access to health care, clean water, education, food, and jobs for the past twenty years—compared to a community where these services have just started was evident at first sight.
On the final leg of the journey, the group was able to visit the Le Palais Aux 365 Portes and the Fort Crète-à-Pierrot - two historical monuments symbolizing Haiti’s important past as the only nation that won independence by a successful slave rebellion. Standing on the wall of the fort where Haiti ensured its independence with a team of extremely talented Haitian colleagues who are incredibly proud of their history, and even more proud to ensure the dignity of the poor in the struggle for human rights and health care,

Stone Gossard and Shawn Smith joined the students of Lakeside School Saturday, February 3, 2010 for the “Helping Haiti: The Best of Lakeside” benefit.
Raising more than $5,400 for charitable relief organization Partners in Health, the evening was both an artistic and financial success with students from Amy Kaz’s sophomore English class putting together all the pieces.
More than 450 members of the Lakeside community turned out to enjoy spoken word poetry, singing by the Acafellas and the Bellas, and performances by Upper School Jazz Band, the Lakeside Swing Dance Club and a special appearance by Stone Gossard and Shawn Smith.
You can watch Lakeside’s donations grow, read more about Partners in Health, and give additional donations, at: standwithhaiti.org

Stone Gossard lives in Seattle, Washington where he works and remains active in various philanthropic and artistic endeavors. A founding member of the internationally acclaimed band Pearl Jam, Gossard has been creating and performing music for well over 25 years. Highlights of Gossard’s music career follow:
Green River (1984 – 1987) – Known for helping kickstart the Seattle music scene, Green River released Come on Down in 1985 and then went on to help establish the Sub Pop label with the release of Dry as a Bone and Rehab Doll.
Mother Love Bone (1987 – 1990) – Within two years of forming, Mother Love Bone manages to incite a major label bidding war, get signed, tour the U.S., release an EP and record a much anticipated debut album. Sadly, lead singer Andy Wood passes away less than a month shy of the intended release of Mother Love Bone's debut.
Pearl Jam (1991 – Current) – Seventeen years later with over 60 million records sold worldwide and numerous awards and accolades, Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament, Mike McCready, Eddie Vedder and Matt Cameron continue to break new ground through music and innovative business practices. With nine studio releases, four concert DVDs, hundreds of cd and digital bootlegs and live recordings, Pearl Jam is going strong towards its 20th year.
Brad (1992 – Current) - Stone Gossard along with Shawn Smith, Regan Hagar, and Jeremy Toback form the band Brad. Subsequent releases include Shame, Interiors, Welcome to Discovery Park and Brad vs. Satchel. A new release is planned for 2008.
Solo Projects (2001, 2008) – Stone Gossard’s first true solo album, Bayleaf, was released on Epic records in 2001. Selections from his second solo effort are being released digitally Sept. 2008.
PHILANTHROPIC EFFORTS
A committed environmentalist, Gossard has quietly worked to use this influence to effect change locally and internationally through direct involvement in many environmental and socially conscious issues. A brief snapshot of Stone Gossard’s philanthropy and activism follows:
Wild Salmon Center
Stone Gossard is an active board member of the Portland based non-profit, The Wild Salmon Center, which works to identify, understand and protect the best wild salmon ecosystems of the Pacific Rim. Wild Salmon devises and implements practical strategies, based on the best science, to protect forever these extraordinary places and their biodiversity.
Conservation International
Stone Gossard has personally remained involved with Conservation International (CI) whose mission is to conserve the Earth's living heritage, global biodiversity, and to demonstrate that human societies are able to live harmoniously with nature. CI applies innovations in science, economics, policy and community participation to protect the Earth's richest regions of plant and animal diversity in the biodiversity hotspots, high-biodiversity wilderness areas as well as important marine regions around the globe. With headquarters near Washington, D.C., CI works in more than 40 countries on four continents.
Carbon Portfolio Strategy
Spearheaded by Stone Gossard, the Carbon Portfolio Strategy is part of Pearl Jam’s ongoing efforts to advance clean renewable energy and carbon mitigation. Through this Strategy, the band has donated more than $150,000 to nine organizations doing innovative work around climate change, renewable energy, and the environment. Pearl Jam’s donations went to: American Solar Energy Society, Bonneville Environmental Foundation, Conservation International, Green Empowerment, Honor the Earth, Cascade Land Conservancy, IslandWood, EarthCorps and the Washington Clean Energy Initiative. By working with these groups and others to mitigate carbon emissions, Pearl Jam ultimately hopes to become 0% net emissions for all tours and band businesses.
Cascade Land Conservancy
Recognized for their ongoing contributions to not only the Cascade Land Conservancy, but other worthwhile environmentally philanthropic endeavors, Stone Gossard accepted the 2007 Conservation Creativity Award on behalf of Pearl Jam at CLC’s 12th Annual Conservation Award Breakfast. As Washington’s largest independent land conservation and stewardship organization, CLS has over the past decade led the conservation of more than 140,000 acres ranging broadly from the recent expansion of Tacoma’s popular Snake Lake park to conserving vast forested areas in the Snoqualmie Forest.
New Apollo Energy Project
Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard has been meeting with Washington State Representative Jay Inslee regularly for the past three years in support of the “New Apollo Energy Project.” Inslee's legislation will use new and innovative tax incentives and market-based assistance, along with energy performance standards to address three challenges in America: creating clean energy manufacturing jobs, decreasing dependence on foreign oil, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. As the most comprehensive and technologically visionary energy program proposed in Congress, New Apollo seeks to solve America's energy problems and high-energy costs through technological innovation.
Honor the Earth
Pearl Jam supports Honor the Earth's goal is to provide funding and public support for Native environmental initiatives and to create a stronger voice for the earth. Honor the Earth's focus is on grant making and political advocacy in the areas of environmental justice and indigenous wisdom.
Through Gossard’s involvement with Honor the Earth and Red Feather Development, he was introduced to, and has remained active with, the people of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Currently, Gossard is exploring ways to support the installation of a wind turbine on the Rez, which will ultimately provide an alternative energy resource and employment opportunities to this impoverished community.
Vote or Change Tour Alternative Energy Projects
Pearl Jam spearheaded an effort on the 2004 Vote for Change tour, encouraging VFC artists to fund small-scale alternative energy projects in the states they toured through. VFC artists partnered with Bonneville Environmental Foundation to help select the alternative energy projects that the artists supported. Pearl Jam contributed $25,000 toward these efforts and received matching grants from fellow artists like Dave Matthews.
An example of VFC’s local impact:
In Wisconsin, the Vote for Change performers funded the installation of a solar hot water system and a solar electric power system as part of a facility renovation and expansion project at the Family Centers in Madison, WI.
Arts Corps
Stone Gossard is a founding advisor to Seattle’s Arts Corps, which leads the way in offering free arts education classes to kids in grades K-12. Through this unique program, Arts Corps places experienced teaching artists in education facilities all over King County, fostering our greatest resource: young people.
And More
Stone Gossard’s philanthropy has extended to a host of other important organizations including Doctors without Borders, Northwest School, Green Empowerment, Seattle Alliance for Education, Youthcare, Punkvoter, Choice USA, Future of Music Coalition, CARE, Red Feather Development Group, Partners in Health, People for Puget Sound and Northwest Harvest.
