this was my fourth pearl jam show, my first one in a foreign country and one that i think surprised ed. the night before i think the band had a great show in germany so i don't think they placed much hope for this to be as good. but the crowd was very into the night, and as the set-list progressed the band began to realize it would be a special night as well. there was a weird end to the first set as the band didn't all seem to go off at once. i think they meant to play some more songs, but a few went off then all of them. they came back a bit confused looking. i don't think they've ever finished a set with severed hand, so i'm sure something funky was up. then stone's guitar malfunctioned (seems to happen a lot) at the beginning of black so eddie took the opportunity to read a sign (pictured) that a fan had held up. then eddie decided to let the fan choose the next song. "i thought she'd want a love song, but she wants whipping!" said ed as the band tore into the request. when that happened the lid blew off the place and the crowd and the band knew it was "one of those great nights". the only bummer is that the night had to be cut short because of a strict curfew, leaving us all (including the band) feeling like a legendary night got cut short. so the night ended as great but not in the stratosphere like it should have been. the band made up for it two years later at the gydnia music festival, another short night, but full of greatest hits, so the crowd was extremely thankful.
