I worked at the show and slipped into the amphiteater to avoid the downpour. I do remember Eddie mudsliding down the sloped lawn at one point, but don't think it was during their set.
Worked the Lolla at SPAC the year before, too... saw Jane's Addiction.
I remember this set - it was EPIC. My first PJ show. Lollapalooza 1992 at Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, NY.
It didn't just rain, it was a downpour. The lawn turned into a mudslide before the day was over. When PJ hit the stage second (after Lush) in the lineup, sometime in the early afternoon, the boys ripped into "Once" and it was ALL OVER. Myself and hundreds of other fans stuck in the lawn heard the guitars, saw the sparsely populated reserved section under the roof, and immediately bum-rushed security. Those guards had no chance; they saw the wall of bodies and just dropped their arms. I saw one guy get his head stepped on. We all made it to the stage as the music washed over us.
Pearl Jam rocked! Chairs were ripped out of the concrete and had to be passed up front. Part of the flooring over the orchestra pit collapsed. The storm was so severe that all the lighting went out - the lightning, thunder, wind, and rain must have screwed with the power. But the generators running the sound kept going, so PJ rocked through the storm. Eddie did some great crowd jumps that day.
Everyone, I mean EVERYONE in SPAC that day became instant Pearl Jam fans if they weren't already. I had been preaching the gospel of Pearl Jam to friends for over a year at that point. That day was a vindication for me. Part of the reason I live here in Seattle is because of Pearl Jam. I've seen more Pearl Jam gigs than I can remember, in big venues and small clubs (SHOWBOX rules), and even have had the pleasure of meeting a couple of them since moving here in 1995.
Thanks a lot Mother Nature. It was raining so hard on the way to SPAC, that we had to pull over on I-87 because we couldn't see a damn thing. The 5 PJ songs we saw were amazing though.
