I stood in line for hours by myself to be sure my friends (who showed up later) and I were front and centre. Sure enough we were. We were 20 years old and this girl in front of us, about 16, turned and said "aren't you guys a bit old to like Pearl Jam"?! During soundcheck they played Rockin In the Free World but they didn't play it during the show.
The opening band was the Cadillac Tramps and they were late for their start time. Security and crew were in front of us moving the barricades closer to the stage when Eddie came out. He had his hat on backwards and it didn't seem like many people in the crowd knew who he was. He apologized for the delay and said that they told the promoters to move the barricades closer. They didn't want the fans so far away.
During the Cadillac Tramps Jeff stood side stage videotaping them. The lead singer was a hefty guy and at times he would lift his shirt to show a smiley face drawn on his big belly. He would shake his stomach to make the face move and Jeff would die laughing. Cadillac Tramps did a full cover of Owner of a Lonely Heart which Pearl Jam also covered partially later on.
Ended up on Mike's side for a bit so I started yelling out a request for Leash. VS hadn't been released yet but I heard the song on a bootleg. The only problem was the bootleg listed the name as Drop The Leaves. So I'm yelling "PLAY DROP THE LEAVES....DROP THE LEAVES!!!". Mike just looked at me like I was crazy, smiled and laughed. The mosh pit was intense. Took a lot of Doc Martens to the face and there were some big guys surfing the crowd so just as Even Flow started we made our way to the back of the pit. Of course that was right when Ed stage dove.
I can't remember them playing Indifference at all so it's very cool to read the other comments on here to jog my memory. Wish there was a bootleg of this somewhere.
The final song they did was Indifference. It was amazing, with Ed the only one you could see on stage, very dim light. It was intense and dreamlike and electric, once in a lifetime feeling. This was right after the stage dive. The security guys were going nuts, until Ed was back on the stage. They rushed him offstage so fast we thought he was hurt. But a few minutes later he came out and sang Indifference.
They started the show with Release, which I thought was perfect, the way the song builds up from nothing. I remember they played Animal, and Daughter, possibly even Rearview Mirror. I remember Ed playing guitar while singing it. It was the first time I'd ever seen him play.
After digging "Ten" since it was unleashed upon us "groove rockers" (that's right, I'm a "Groove Rocker" not a grunger!), being sonically slayed by them at this show guaranteed I'd be a fan for life.
***the setlist is incomplete but they did state of love and trust , and Animal and blood off of VS***
Yes, our psychotropically-enhanced friend is correct! They also played Baba O Riley after they toyed with Owner of a Lonely Heart for a bit.
The pit was going fairly well and I really wanted to crowd surf but I was clutching onto about half a dozen t-shirts I bought for other people and risked losing them had I gone up. Myself and the 3 people I went with were all soggy and smiley after what was a a fantastic mid-summer show. All ages show though so I was mighty thirsty...
this show was excellent , i was high on L.S.D and when Eddie sang the beginning of release , i could see his aura getting bigger as the song built , amazing , the setlist is incomplete but they did state of love and trust , and Animal and blood off of VS , when eddie was in the crowd during even flow they wouldnt let him go and they had very minimal security and he finally got back on the stage and he said how well we represented our city , so cool . My fave concert ever!
I was twelve when I saw Pearl Jam for the first time at the Convention Centre in Edmonton. It was right before they really became big and the venue only held 2000 people. Ed jumped into the crowd during Even Flow and they played every song off Ten except for Oceans. Best concert ever!
