I was only 22 years old but became a die hard two years earlier.
I felt transcended between the amazing music, the phenomenal sound and the intensity of the crowd. To hear favorite tune after favorite tune right in front of me for the first time AND DONE SO WELL... I became a live fan for life by about 'State of Love and Trust' had finished.
I do remember Eddie being detached from the crowd a bit. Nothing like he is now. A fan had tossed a letter up to the stage. He picked it up and asked the crowd 'Should I read it?' They screamed yes, he opens envelope, unfolds letter and reads it. To himself. Kind of funny.
The best part about this show is that it was general admission. My friends and I shimmied our way right up to the stage, it was amazing. The band was literally five feet away from us. My boyfriend and I at the time got into a huge fight because I wouldn't leave the stage when his earring got ripped out of his ear by a crowd surfers Doc Marten. What's a little blood right???
My first Pearl Jam show. I was 30 feet from the stage direct center on the floor for the main set. They had basketball figures and candles on all the amps. I knew I was at the right place! Ed came out wearing an army jacket (that he wore all the time in 93/94) and had his black telecaster with the 'skateboarding is not a crime' bumper sticker. He then ripped into 'Rearviewmirror'. Mike was wearing a black southern rock-style top hat.
The best strobe light I’ve ever seen was during the 'Porch' jam. It was intense and the entire arena was light..then dark...light...dark..etc.. Ed spun the mic around and with the strobe light it looked like a flip show. I got tired of fighting the rough crowd/pit and went back near the soundboard for the encores. Best 'Spin the Black Circle' ever. During the beginning Ed spun the mic cord like a jump rope but in a corkscrew fashion to the first few riffs. Looking back the entire encore was amazing. 'Yellow Ledbetter' before it was big, 'Outta my Mind', 'My Generation' and 'Rockin in the Free World'. When I got back to the car and realized I was drenched in sweat. Even today I feel luck to have been there. Great show!
