Approximately 33 Acres of Native Trees and Plants Will be Planted Around the Puget Sound between Now and 2013
SEATTLE (March 29, 2010) – Pearl Jam announced today that it will voluntarily mitigate carbon emissions from the band's 2009 world tour by partnering with the Cascade Land Conservancy (CLC), a national leader in urban forest restoration, to plant approximately 33 acres of native trees and plants in communities around the Puget Sound. Pearl Jam’s donation of $210,000 will fund the urban forestry project and mitigate more than 7,000 metric tons of carbon. Conservation International chief adviser, climate and water, Michael Totten estimates Pearl Jam’s actual carbon emissions from its 32-date 2009 tour to be 5,474 metric tons of CO2. The band will also track, calculate and mitigate its carbon for their current 2010 tour.
“A band on tour generates a lot of carbon,” said Stone Gossard, Pearl Jam’s guitarist and founder. “We are constantly moving, using carbon-dependent forms of transportation and a great deal of energy. Since 2003, we have elected to mitigate our carbon output by tracking and calculating our emissions and contributing money to projects that strategically work to improve the environment. We view this as a cost of doing business.”
For their 2009 tour mitigation, Gossard and the band decided to partner with CLC’s community-based stewardship program to remove invasive plants and replant with native shrubs and trees in order to address the serious decline of urban forested areas. The restoration efforts, beginning immediately, will be in partnership with local city agencies and community volunteers and will be completed by December 2013.
“Trees are incredible at absorbing carbon,” said Gene Duvernoy, CLC president. “Pearl Jam’s contribution will enable us to plant urban forests throughout the Puget Sound and restore native trees and understory to ecosystems that have faced intense human pressures. This sort of approach has an enormous impact on improving forest health, connecting people to nature, and activating communities to engage in the restoration and stewardship of natural open spaces,”said Duvernoy.
Pearl Jam and CLC believe businesses, decision-makers and policy-makers have an opportunity to lead by example in creating a sustainable green economy by mitigating and reducing the use of fossil-based energy.
“Businesses have an opportunity to lead the way in becoming a more conscious economy, one that views the health of our environment as inseparable from our personal and economic well being,” said Gossard. “Tracking and mitigating the band’s carbon footprint is a big first step that our business is taking in that direction, and we hope other businesses will join us in this effort."
Gossard continues, "We can encourage businesses and people to innovate and dream of products, ideas and modern approaches to doing business that not only benefit us financially in the short term, but benefit our earth and humanity in the long term."
Innovative partnerships are at the core of CLC.
“We have a bold vision at CLC,” said Duvernoy. “Through partnerships and innovative approaches we aim to conserve more than a million acres of farms, forests and natural areas. To protect our natural landscapes, we must look to our cities. They are the solution. If we can make our neighborhoods spectacular enough for people to choose to live there, then we have an opportunity to save our remaining farms and forests. Great healthy parks make great livable cities.”
Natural forested areas are in serious decline and Pearl Jam’s home state serves as a reminder as to the critical balance nature plays in creating healthy, livable communities.
“We are very fortunate to live in Washington state,” said Gossard. “We have such natural beauty and abundance here with our rivers, forests and wildlife. It’s to our advantage to preserve our resources because it serves so many of our fundamental needs. For example, in the winter our mountains and glaciers store our summer drinking water and hydro power, and our greenbelts give us clean air and a beautiful landscape.”
This is not the first time Pearl Jam has teamed up with CLC. In 1997, CLC partnered with members of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden to help purchase and preserve forest land in the Cascade foothills.
PEARL JAM TOUR CARBON CALCULATION: Pearl Jam’s 2009 carbon emissions were calculated by Michael Tottenchief adviser, climate and water for Conservation International, a nonprofit that works with businesses and governments to ensure that sustainable practices are undertaken that preserve biodiversity and reduce climate. The following variables were taken into account: air and bus travel for the band and crew; hotel rooms and nights for the band and crew; the venues at which the band performs; the attendance for each concert; concert equipment freight and transportation; plus a good faith estimate of fan travel to and from each concert.
CASCADE LAND CONERVANCY MITIGATION CALCULATION: The carbon mitigation will come from the reforestation of targeted acres within Cascade Land Conservancy’s network of Green City Partnerships’ cities. The amount of mitigated CO2 is the difference between the current state of the forests and the amount of carbon that will be stored in future forests over the next 125 years. CLC used the US Forest Service’s General Technical Report NE-343 (GTR-NE-343), Methods for Calculating Forest Ecosystem and Harvested Carbon with Standard Estimates for Forest Types of the United States, published in 2006, as the source for estimates of carbon stocks. ABOUT PEARL JAM:
Pearl Jam has used its influence to affect change locally and internationally through direct involvement in many environmental and socially conscious issues. Their work to this end has included support of such organizations as The Wild Salmon Center, The Cascade Land Conservancy, Conservation International, Surfrider, Honor the Earth and People for Puget Sound. Alongside these efforts, Pearl Jam implemented its own Carbon Portfolio Strategy beginning with its 2003 tour in an effort to help mitigate the impact of their carbon footprint. By working with and highlighting these groups and others, Pearl Jam ultimately hopes they can help advance preservation of existing ecosystems, restoration of degraded environments, and continued investment in clean, renewable energy technologies.
Since their inception in 1991, Pearl Jam has sold more than 60 million albums worldwide including millions of live bootlegs. The band has released eight (8) previous studio records, two (2) live records, one (1) double-disc b-side record, one (1) double-disc greatest hits record and five (5) live/touring DVDs.

It makes it a more enjoyable concert experience when we know our hard earned money goes directly to a good cause. As always, thank you Pearl Jam for being socially conscious.
just another reason to we can trust and respect this band :)
If half the people in our country were half as decent as the guys in Pearl Jam and the folks in their organization, our world would be a remarkably better place. Thank you, Pearl Jam (and others), for all that you do. You are such an immense gift, such an amazing example for us all, for everybody. Thank you.
would be cool if there was a way those of us travelling far and wide could calculate our won and contribute (yeah I know it says fan travel is included but I don't think it really factors Euros and Ozzies travelling to the US for example ;))
Thanks guys for doing the right thing, and providing an example for other touring bands out there.
Just when you think you guys couldn't get any cooler, you do something like this. Thanks.
Good move.
Wish my canadian gov. could understand that kind of move in reducing C02 gas by move like this.
It's kind of things that I like from Pearl Jam: consiciousness of the others and nature.
Thanks for being involved in what I call good causes.
From Quebec City.
thumbs up & my honest respect for this! :-) if everyone would be such concious about his CO2 footprint, we could be saved...
Well said.
wow, guys you are awesome. Paying it forward eh, you just don't miss a beat!!
whoopee. Is that why tickets are $100?
If tickets are too expensive for you, don't buy them. This is great news, from a great band. Preserving the environment and forest land is very important. I'm glad to see that they choose to use their money towards something that has a good cause.
25 shows over 15 years. I've seen tix triple in price in the last 10 yrs. It's not "their $", its your $. The band ain't taking a pay cut for trees- their just charging us for them. I'm still buying the tix- I just can't afford the T-shirt/ poster/ plane tix/ gas/ etc. anymore.
No hard feelings...
Love the band, been following them around the country for almost 20 years, but enough with the global warming stuff. Ten minutes of research will show that most of it is a scam, another way for the rich to control and impoverish us. I agree also the ticket prices are getting a little out of hand. I too still buy them but it does limit the number of shows I can attend per tour now.
I've seen every show in St. Louis since 93, even flew to maui at the arts center to seem them in 98 at the start of the yield tour. i just can't afford it anymore. This was the band that swore up and down they wouldn't screw the fans on ticket prices and look what happens, they don't sellout every show across the U.S. like they should. the importance here is to get a wider fan base with the up and coming young people, how are they going to go if they can't swing the cash. We have all been paying years of ten club memberships even when they don't put out a record or come to your town, that should count towards a discount on ticket prices don't yeah think. Everyone in the country has taken a pay cut why doesn't pearl jam
Pj sucks
Ever heard of 'inflation'? It's 2010, nothing costs the same as it did in 1993. The guys need to make money for their families too remember.
PJ never cease to impress me and I'm really proud of them to be contributing in this way. Well done guys!
Tickets are 100 dollars because we go to a quality show .....would gladly pay more to see them live ..wish they would come to uk more. O just got my tickets for june London concert and they were 115 pounds. Money hard earned but well spent I say
Ok goldrush in 1993 two tickets $50.00 how about 2003, two tickets $81.00, and 2010 two tickets $150.00 thats more than inflation thats robbery, not to say i'm not glad to see them take action for the inviroment or what ever meaningful cause that they choose, but i can do that all by myself i don't need a band to do it for me
This band never ceases to amaze me. How pretentious and two faced can these guys get. Overcharge the fans that made you rich, then force them to pay a charity fee for every ticket and yet the band takes the credit for it. Who the hell is this band anymore? I agree with Nothingman54- PJ of 2010 ( really past 2003) does truly suck. Way to lose touch with your fans you accolade/money hungry millionaires.
k
When they partnered with TARGET I threw up. Remember the Target Bullseye on the guitars in the commercial? Pure vomit. I might as well be supporting corporate whores like U2 or Metallica. I have loved Pearl Jam for 20 years,- their music has been the soundtrack to my life, but they have changed. This was a band that was in the trenches with us, but I look around now and they're gone- standing up there with Ticketmaster and Target, charging $100 a ticket. The music still rocks and I love to see them, but... I just don't believe in them anymore. C'mon guys..."Come Back"
The best thing for the environment would be to have more shows in and around Seattle. That way they wouldn't have to load up the trucks and planes to tour. MORE SEATTLE SHOWS PLEASE!!!
Nice work fellas!
I guess they have to do something to help them sleep at night. shoulda moved to Cananda like they promised.
it is very easy to knock and complain about something - but it is another thing to actually get up off your ass and do something about it. The band have done something about their CO2 footprint and they should be congratulated not moaned at for the price of their tix. To those of you that think that global warning is a hoax please educate yourselves and read a few articles outside Rolling Stone or FHM! Once again guys, thank you for doing what you are doing, i sincerely wish more businesses would follow your lead.
And you are welcome to come to Canada any time you want especially Vancouver where we love you more than any other Canadian city ;)
Nice going Guys, You made the effort to come all the way over here to New Zealand, which we were grateful for,but it makes it all the better to think our support of you goes a long way to helping the planet. As many people before me have said, I just wish our governments would take as a responsible positon as you have. Much love and respect.
Nice work.
Another great movement would be to stop selling plastic bottled water at concerts. Bottled water and soda plastics are a major problem for our environment as they leak toxins for years in landfills and waterways. Just walk along Venice or Santa Monica or any California beach and it's covered in trash mostly being bottled water and soda containers. Our beaches are filthy and they are a direct reflection of our ocean.
Someone may ask or think "I like my bottled water. Go save the squirrels". What are we going to do for water at the concerts?
Ahh duh I don't know? What did they do at the Springsteen concerts back in the 70s. Wasn't any bottled water then. Tell ya what they did. People had a drink of water before they left for the show and they somehow miraculously were able to survive. And if you're out in the hot sun. bring your canteen. Much cooler.
Well done PJ. Whatever way you're getting it done, keep on doing it. In the end the music will save us....
Thanks for all you do Pearl Jam.
Now I'd like to know when you are going to burn some disel, and jet fule ect, and make a carbon footprint here in the great state of Wisconsin. We Wisconsinites miss you. My Dad and I have got your carbon footprint already coverd. We have a 55 acre tree farm in the Wisconsin North Woods. My dad and I planted 20,000 Norway Pines there, and a good sized portion of our land is hard wood, maple, oak, black cherry ect. And 8 acres of it is natural Wisconsin swamp.
Just thought I'd throw that tid-bit out there.
You are welcome in Wisconsin whenever you choose.
Sincerely
Ryan...........................
I saw a critism that it would take so many years for the trees to grow up and pay back the carbon usage last year. Well wake up folks, thats why it's so darned important to take many carbon cutting actions by you me and all corporations and countries. The damage cant be turned around on a dime. Takes years. And still humans are cutting downs hundreds of acres of trees on every continent every day. Only a fraction of the earths land remain forested compared to before we covered the planet like ants. Thank goodness pj is doing their part. As for ticket prices, allot less money is available to donate from record sales cause so few records sell across the board. I think pj feels they want to be able to make enough money to support their chosen charities as a condition and reason for continuing as well as artistic and self employment reasons. I for one am happy about that. And they dont take on sponsors for their tours. so thanks pj, you donate, I will pay.
I can't believe I'm getting sucked into this, but I also can't believe some of the retards that are spouting off on here.
Top of the list... RZ27566. You expect us to believe that you can save the environment on your own when you can't even SPELL the word "inviroment". Here's a hint... It starts with an "e", and there is actually a tricky "n" somewhere in the middle there. Might not be so tough for you if you would put down that bong and Nintendo remote you have been clutching since that day in third grade when you decided to skip your spelling test. Then maybe you could get a productive job that might pay you enough money that you could afford a ticket to see Pearl Jam. Then we wouldn't all be dumber for reading your stupid posts. Or better yet... if you want to whine about it so much, just don't bother coming to the show. Someone else will gladly fill your seat for you.
As for the band... We are on opposite ends of the political spectrum, and I don't agree with a lot of the things they do, but that hasn't stopped me from believing that they are the best band in the world since that day back in third grade when I got their album (and you were getting high). If they want to spend their money giving back to the greater community, who are we to tell them they shouldn't. That's the great thing about living in a free country, they can do what they want with their money and no one can stop them. That's what it's about... Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness! And if economic and political climates are such that transportation costs (and therefore the cost of touring) have skyrocketed out of control, then why can't they raise their prices a few bucks so they can still travel the world and bring their music to millions of fans, like me, who just want to see them perform? I am an avid concert goer, and relatively speaking their tickets are VERY reasonable, so I'll still pay for them.
Thanks Pearl Jam! Keep on rockin' in the free.... United States!!!
