When i was in the U.S Army i was stationed at Fort Polk in Louisianna and i made sure to make it to these areas that are being effected. If this doesn't make your stomach churn then there is something wrong with you. It's hard to fathom any company large enough to drill for oil underwater doesn't have a plan for damage control prior to starting the operation. How is this possible? There are dozens - perhaps hundreds - more oil rigs already in the gulf, from other countries including our own. And other rigs in other bodies of water around the world. This single event is sorry enough. What if it happens again? Does ANY oil company have ANY strategy to prevent and/or stop such an event from unfolding to this magnitude.
And this government thinks - or maybe now, "thought" - after each failed attempt to stop a well from gushing that we need to INCREASE this threat? Insultingly ridiculous. Politics/government/corporations - really all one and the same - become more blind, stupid, and ignorant everyday. This oil charade is just the latest example.
I read about this and watch CNN often to learn more about this. Now they say it will go until August before another rig can be put on top. BP made $5.6 BILLION in the 1st quarter while the clean up is $930 MILLION. The CEO made $4.5 MILLION last year. What about the fishermen who make $40,000 a year. What about the animals that die for nothing? What about the 1,000's of employees that BP was supposed to hire and are never seen. We can put a man on the moon, we can create a cell phone that we can do anything on, we can create cars that go 250mph, etc... but we can not figure out a way to STOP or at least SLOW this thing down? Its been 43 days with another 60+ ahead? The earth can not handle this. This is not just a 90 day issue, it will be 10's of years. We will be finding oil in sand, grass, water, forever. Obama get after these guys, make them work around the clock. Ground 0 after 911 had people non stop, well this is getting to that point where we need more help. BP needs to fix this instead of shrugging their shoulders and just sitting on their hands while profits soar. Its idiotic and irresponsible. We need to do something, because they are not and our government is slow in reacting too. I HATE THIS!!!

I don't understand why BP will not simply collapse the well. To collapse the well all BP would have to do is drill 1000 feet down at the site (much more shallow than the relief wells, set charges and blow the hole. The weight of 1000 feet of soil and heat from the explosion would be enough to stop the flow permanently. The Russian’s have done this 3-4 times in the last decade, we know it works. The catch is, BP would lose the well and no longer be able to extract oil from the site. In other words BP is putting their profits ahead of everything...appalling.
Come on world somebody out there must have a solution!!! This is horrible that it's gone on this long! With all the technology out there now I can't believe this can't be solved immediately!!

Not buying gas from BP won't make much of a difference, if any. BP makes money in many ways that we don't even know: asphalt, tires, etc. These things do not say "BP" on them.
But people can make a difference. History shows this. We need to use less petroleum products. Less plastic water bottles. Refill them when you can. Ride a skateboard to the store. Or a bike. And teach your kids the irreversible harm cause by an oil-based lifestyle.
