Great Turtle Race Update: Backspacer Wins! Loomstate Responds to the Pearl Jam Audience Favorite Challenge

04.27.09
We’re happy to report that Backspacer’s long journey came to victorious end today! She was the first to cross the Great Turtle Race - http://www.greatturtlerace.org - finish line through the Windward Islands, between St. Vincent and St. Lucia. Thank you all for cheering her on! In response to the Great Turtle Race Pearl Jam Audience Favorite Challenge, our friends over at Loomstate - http://www.loomstate.org - have made a generous donation to Conservation International. They put their money on Backspacer, how ‘bout you? Even though Backspacer crossed the finish line first, the Pearl Jam Audience Favorite trophy has yet to be awarded. There’s still time to vote - https://secure2.convio.net/cintl/site/Donation2?df_id=3800&3800.donation... - for your top turtle by making a gift to support Conservation International. All donations will be matched dollar for dollar. The winner will be announced Wednesday, April 29th. Be sure to keep checking back at the Great Turtle Race official site - http://animals.nationalgeographic.com/animals/article/greatturtlerace.html - to root the rest of the turtles across the finish line. Learn more about Loomstate organic clothing and their socially and environmentally responsible methods of production here - http://www.loomstate.org/about/ . Backspacer’s coach, Olympic swimmer Eric Shanteau, cheers her across the finish line to victory!

"I like turtles"

CONGRATULATIONS to our girl BACKSPACER for a great race! We all knew you could do it and now we don't have to bow-down to R.E.M either. So - how about the babies...?

Yippee, way to go!

I think that billy lost his direction because a power riff from backspacer!!!
Congrats to CI and to our beloved flying turtle

There is still time to donate to the THE GREAT TURTLE RACE 2009, Pearl Jam Audience Favorite!

Take the Pearl Jam Audience Favorite Challenge and your gift will be matched to Conservation International!

Only one turtle can win the race. That’s why we’ve created our Audience Favorite category. Show your support of our favorite turtle, "BACKSPACER"! It’s easy.

1. Make a donation. Your gift will be matched dollar for dollar by a generous donor.
2. Vote for our favorite #1 turtle, Backspacer.
3. We will tally the winner and announce our audience favorite at the end of the race at www.conservation.org/TurtleRace

https://secure2.convio.net/cintl/site/Donation2?df_id=3800&3800.donation...

Your generous support will go directly to Conservation International’s work protecting species including leatherback turtles and the habitats they call home. Your gift will also help communities of people that depend upon healthy ecosystems for their very survival.

Watch Turtle Coach, Eric Shanteau hint at the origins of our #1 girl, Backspacer's name! Can't wait until the Fall to find out!

nice work backspacer

We are the Champions my friends!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just checked back in with the race map and the clock is still ticking but half of the competitors haven't moved for several days; in fact, Billy hasn't moved since storming into an early lead. I tried to find out if they are 'resting' or have fallen prey to the ocean but couldn't get any info on the official website. Anyone know anything about what is happening with them?

This is so nice. What a long voyage for Backspacer! I just watched a Nature episode called "Voyage of the Lonely Turtle" which was really informative. Worth checking out. It was on loggerheads - relatives of leatherbacks. I love turtles :)

BACKSPACER,,GET SOME..

If any of you are interested in volunteering working with loggerhead sea turtles in Greece, check out this link. It is not only a great learning experience for a great cause but great fun and a fantastic way to meet new folks from other walks of life. I camped 100 yards from the beach in Crete and would recommend it to anyone! http://www.archelon.gr/index_eng.php.
