United We Serve

This summer, President Obama is calling on all Americans to participate in our nation’s recovery and renewal by serving in our communities. The United We Serve campaign is one of the key initiatives from the White House designed to activate individuals, build communities, and move the nation forward positively. Visit www.serve.gov for tools on how to develop your own project, find out more about organizations needing help in your communities, or share your success stories.

Our friends over at HeadCount aren’t done taking care of business now that the election is over.

As co-founder Andy Bernstein reminds us, “It's not just about voting for candidates we each believe in. It's about what the candidates do once we put them in office. As a community, we have a unique opportunity to influence this. The people in power recognize that musicians and their fans helped get them elected...we can now help dictate the political agenda - if we stay organized.”

Wild Salmon Center board member Stone Gossard recently had the opportunity to meet with Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) and Wild Salmon Center staff to discuss the Pacific Salmon Stronghold Conservation Act.

A note from our friend Andy Bernstein, founder of HeadCount

If there was any question about young people’s power to change the world, the 2008 presidential election answered it. Beyond the fact that 66% of young voters (18-29) voted for Obama, the real impact was on the primaries. Obama consistently outpaced Hillary Clinton among the younger age groups. When you consider the razor-thin margin by which he won, you can state with certainty that if it wasn’t for young voters, there would have been a Clinton vs. McCain general election. “Yes We Can” is only true because so many young voters can say “Yes We Did.”

National Day of Service – Monday, January 19th

President-elect Barack Obama is calling for a National Day of Service on Monday, January 19th -- the Federal holiday for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday and the day preceding Obama's Inauguration as President.

We encourage all of you to start this new era for our country off right. Check out the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service site to find a volunteer opportunity in your area or create one of your own. We hope this day of activism inspires you to carry out efforts in your communities and beyond throughout the new year.
